(The Hell of the North)
I looked at the weather the day before the ride and imagined what it would be like to have a tailwind all day. The cold front was supposed to move in sometime in the early afternoon, hopefully as soon as we reached our most northern point of the day.
I couldn't have been more wrong!
As I made the drive up to
The ride started beautifully, we hopped on the greenbelt north of 380 a beautifully groomed dirt road that winds through the trees, the mood was light and the weather was perfect. About halfway down the greenbelt Mike Bohn gets a flat, it was quickly repaired, though not a quickly as Lalla would do! And we were off again. Another half mile down the road the tire blows again! This was our first warning. We stand around and heckle Mike, but are shortly on the road again. 100 yards later Katie gets a flat! Something doesn’t seem right, someone doesn’t want us on the road today!
We do not heed these warnings and are soon off again, heading farther north. We pop out from the green belt and hop on the main road, soon we head directly north on a road completely exposed to the wind. This is where we realize what we are in for, this ride is going to be brutal. We wind around
As we start to make our way south we are excited to see what a 35mph tail wind feels like! No such luck! We are again hit with multiple flats, 3 more to be exact, stretching our ride time to over 5hrs, and we still haven’t seen the 90 mile mark. We are running low on tubes, and patience! The group decides to call it a day and head for home, I think we ended up with just over 90 miles and a ride time of just under 6hrs.
After it was all said and done, I think this is one of those rides that makes you stronger, both mentally and physically. It pushes you to the very limit of muscular and mental strength, and will make the riding in
