Day 2
The Forecast called for a high of 50 degrees by noon and partly sunny skies. Dark skies and a temp of 34 degrees greeted us as we rolled into the race venue. A jersey, a vest, a base layer, 2 sheets of paper from the race flyer, knee warmers, a 100$ first lap prime, a skinsuit, and I was as warm as a bug in a rug. I mean seriously 34 degrees?? Come on texas I think you can do better than that!
The course on Day 2 of the tour of new braunfels takes place at beautiful canyon lake. The course is 2.1 miles in length and basically has 1 corner and a few slight twists. Rusty, Corey, and I discussed our pre race strategy while trying to shiver off the cold, and thankfully before we know it the race starts. Speeds were high and the peloton seems a bit jittery and nervous as things get rolling. Most of the 60-70 are content to sit in as this race traditionally ends in a field sprint. Our strategy was to be aggressive and cover as many moves as possible and hopefully insert one of us into a promising move. The speeds of the main group on this day seemed too great to illicit a breakaway.
The only move that gained more than 10 seconds i would say is a solo move by san jose rider brant speed. His move lasted around 2 laps which is a testament to the athletic and physical ability he possesses. Once he was reeled in with around 3-4 laps to go the sprint teams started moving forward to position their sprinter in the best possible position. It is truly a beautiful thing to watch teams organize and set up their sprinters. Josh Carter took the win making it look so so so incredibly easy. Corey mixed things up in the sprint a bit and managed a 14th position. Overall, I believe we raced aggressively as a team and are beginning to show signs of team cohesiveness and chemistry!
